What is the best act of kindness you've ever received from a stranger?

When my parents were in Australia, my Dad lost his wallet. It contained quite a bit of cash, credit cards and various other items. About a month later, when he was back in England after his vacation, he received a package in the mail. In it was his wallet, complete with everything in it. Even the money was all there, except for the value of the postage.

Inside the package was a note saying that the wallet had been found on the steps of Sydney Opera House. The finder had gone through it to find the owner's name and address, packaged it up and mailed it. The kind person who returned it didn't even give their name.

We're always hearing about people doing terrible things in the news. How about some stories of kindness? What acts of kindness have you personally witnessed or been on the receiving end of?

  1. Last Christmas, it was me and my little son and we went shopping one cold night. I bought better things than normal, and when I got to check out, I had a row of people behind me. I didn't have enough.I had thought I had more. The cashier got really mad and said I had to wait while she put back things. The people in line behind me were mad and understandably. I just froze and started to cry. Everything hit me at once. I wanted to run, but I was frozen. They opened up another line. My son jabbered about the treats. A woman behind me offered to pay and I was horrified, and pridefully said "no, thank you." She then handed the cashier a blank check. She told me I had an adorable child, and I was trying not to cry, and she said," I have been you, before." I turned to her with a wide mouth and tearing up as I took my full cart of the sweetest goodies, and she smiled honestly and said, "Don't worry, Merry Christmas." I wept but knew she didn't want me to be ashamed but to prosper. We had such a sweet Christmas feast. I don't know why she did it. But I can not describe the feeling it gave me, that somehow I mattered to someone. That an angel had gifted our Christmas and she had walked a mile in my shoes.  And everyone was so rude on Christmas Eve shopping that night...maybe even me..it taught me a valuable lesson, and I hoped to aspire to be like her.

  2. Thank you for the story, that honestly did brighten my day.

The kindest thing a stranger has done for me is when a few days ago, a Senior girl who uses the locker above me (I'm a Freshmen) noticed while we were both about to be late for class that I had accidently closed by lock while I was holding onto it.

As I finally opened it, she took it from me and said, 'Get to class, I'll get this for you.'

When I came back to check my locker, nothing had been taken, and the lock was in its place.

Remember, I'm a Freshmen. This was such a random act of kindness.

  3. that's really sweet!

i remember i was at h&m in germany one time. i ran out of money and i had a load of stuff. i was so sad that i would have to leave the rest of the stuff i picked out behind. i'm pretty emotional when it comes to shopping, and i was about to cry right there. then this nice guy behind me offered to pay the balance. i thought that was sweet. and it was like 10-15 dollars worth, too.
