  1. You will need a combination of HEPA and activated carbon filter. the HEPA filter will remove particles such as dust, allergens, molds, soot and any other particle over 0.3 micros in diameter. now wood burning will not only cause high particles from soot and ashes it will also cause the release of VOCS, odors and gases such as carbon monoxide. for that you will need activated carbon. there are units that have both carbon and HEPA protection. i will choose something like the Austin Air health mate which covers up to 1500sq ft and has both HEPA and carbon protection and the filters will last up to 5 years. or a Blue Air but they are more expensive to buy and maintain. see the resource below for more info on these units. good luck!

  2. You may want to go for one with a TRUE HEPA filtration. There are plenty of nice air cleaners on the market and they don't have to cost hundreds.

Also look for the right sq feet coverage. It's mentioned on the box of each cleaner.

If you have any pets, do NOT buy an Ionizer. Those are harmful for pets (especially birds).
