I just got the Rebel XTi and love it. However, as most new DSLR users I have discovered I would like to be able to zoom in a bit closer. I am no professional, but simply just a proud dad that wants to take good shots of my family, especially my boys sporting events. Let me start by saying, I dont know a lot about this world of DSLR lenses. I have gone the retail stores in town and have really got more confused. I have seen the Tamron 18-200 for around $300 and also the Canon 28-135 with IS for around the same price (which is really my target spend) I want to know am I in the right game or should I look at a different brand, range, etc. I want to note, I do not ever see myself taking one lens off to sub with another for specific photo opportunites. As stated above I am looking for an all around lens I can Zoom in and out maninly for taking family photos inside, outside, etc. Any advice would be great.

  1. Hello there.  Ok... what I think you are asking is, if you have to have one lens,  which one would be best for all shooting situations?   You are definately on the right track.   I also have the XTI...  just had it about 2 months and I am also having a ball with it.   As I have a variety of camera accessories and lenses,  I would have to recommend one of the lenses you are looking in to.  The 18-200mm Tamron is a nice lens, as is the Canon 28-135mm.  I have a Canon 28-200mm and it is my all around choice.   There is another reason to just have one basic everyday lens.   It is not a good idea to be changing lenses often,  as this causes particles of dust and lent to inter the shutter chamber and adhere to the sensor... leading to spots on your images... which leads to a cleaning fee ( which in our repair shop amounts to $89.00.)    One lens eliminates that issue and your sensor will stay cleaner longer.   Whichever you decide on,  be sure to pick up one of those UV or Skylight filters to protect the front glass element of your lens... call it insurance!  Hope I was able to help and thanks for reading.

  2. My favorite is the Canon 50mm f1.8 :]
