The best brands of SLR's are Canon and Nikon. Look at the entry level models from both and whichever one you like best will be fine. Both companies make top quality cameras and some of the best lenses in the world. You can't go wrong with either.

The entry level Canons (XT, XTi, or XSi) or Nikons (D40, D40x, D60) would serve any amateur very well.  

But choosing a camera system is like choosing a car.  You need to see how it fits you, the user.  How does it feel in your hands?  Do the controls and menus help or hinder your creativity?

My personal choice is Nikon, but Canon is preferred by others.  You need to handle different models of each system and see which is "best" for you.
