  2. Although all of the bookstores mentioned are worth a look, one of my favorites is the Berkeley Bookstore, around the corner from the San Francisco bookstore. The owner was unbelieveably helpful and because the shop is not as overstuffed, it's more enticing to browse the shelves.

  3. American - are there any? Probably the best-known *English language* bookstore is Shakespeare & Co. bookstore, located at 37, rue de la bucherie, off of rue St. Jacques in the Latin quarter (http://www.shakespeareco.org/). My guidebook says that it is inspired by another (now-gone) bookstore of Sylvia Beach... They have regular poetry readings (I attended a couple), both used & new English language books, a funky atmosphere, and will let you stay there in exchange for working there! On the 2nd floor, sometimes you'll see people napping, lol.... The staff are helpful and (in my experience) not pretentious.

There is WH Smith, an English bookstore, at 248 rue de Rivoli off of Place de la Concorde. It's a chain store and has that kind of selection... They have a decent selection of nonfiction reference-type books.

  4. I'd recommend Shakespear and Co also for books written in english.
