  1. ancestry.com, but you need a subscription.

  2. Unless you've been dead for 50 years AND your aunt spent 10 - 40 years doing research, then uploaded her research to someplace like RWWC, you won't find what you want.

The two people above me assume you would want to spend 100 - 400 hours doing research. I'm betting you would not. If you do, write to me via my profile and I'll try to get you started, assuming you live in the USA and your ancestors did too.

  3. That is impossible.

Try typing in the name of one of you deceased family members.

Since most genealogy sites do not show the names of living persons, you need to concentrate on the deceased members of your family.

ancestry.com has a 14 day free trial offer.

If you decide not to become a member, print all information you discover, each time you visit the site, so that you will have a paper copy of all info, for future reference.

The LDS (Mormons) have a free site (familysearch.com), which will teach you the basics of building your tree.

However, you have to supply the names of your family members and back-up your info on a disc for future use on their site.

They also have pedigree charts and family group sheets, which you can print for free.

This is where the free family group sheets come in handy.

In order to do an Internet search, on any genealogy site, you need to gather info on the first 4 or 5 generations of your family.

Start with your parents, move to your grandparents, great-grandparents, great-greats, and so on. You will also need to collect as many vital statistics as possible; dates of birth & death, places of birth & death, marriage date & place. As you work backwards, having the siblings names of the older generations, will help to identify the correct parents in any one family group, when you are ready to do research on the Internet.

Document your sources. It will help as you collect info, in case you need to re-visit a particular family member or branch of your tree.

You may want to invest in a tape recorder, to use when interviewing older family members. It's a lot easier than trying write down everything they say.

Most public libraries subscribe to a genealogy site and all you need is a library card to access it.

Sometimes, searching is easy and sometimes, it's difficult.

    But, it is never boring!

  4. That won't happen, not to be rude, smart or mean, but there are billions of people in this world, no one is following your family around and writing down names of every person in your family that is born, when and where they were born, and what their relation is to everyone.

You will have to set up your family tree yourself, no one knows but you and your family, unless you have a family member who put up a family tree online.

But, if I put in my name, birthdate, maybe SSN, in a search engine, and it took me to a site that showed my actually family tree, my mother, maternal grandparents, great grandparents, etc., and then my dad's family, I would be very worried and scared

Think about, somebody that actually knows everything about you, more than you or even your family knows, THEN they publish it on the internet, for all to see. We all have some crazy things happen in our family, no one wants to find that stuff submitted on the internet.

Besides, what fun is it for you if someone else did all the researching and searching and discovery.

I love family research, I love doing it myself, it's exciting and exhilarating...But I understand what you are saying, but think about what I'm saying.

  5. Hours, and you still haven't found it? Shocking!

In all seriousness, there is not one specific site where you type in your name and your family tree spits out. There are 6.8 billion people on this planet - that would never be possible. To find your family tree, you have to do the research. You have to take the time to figure out what you know and work your way back, using old records and working with distant cousins to build your tree. This isn't free, and it isn't easy. I've been working on my tree for years.

There are some great sites that contain records for you to search, such as Ancestry.com, but they cost money. Volunteers have put together other free sites, such as the USGenWeb.org group of sites (one for each county in the US) that has some records, but what is available varies.

Your best bet is to start by learning about how people go about researching their family trees so you get a better idea of where to start.

  6. Well, it's not quite that simple. If it were, there'd be no need for professional genealogists. Ancestry.com is very good, but they do charge. I would suggest, if you want to actually sit down with a person who knows what they are doing and work on your family history FOR FREE, look for your local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons). The church has a family history center and is open to the public and you can have a real person help you instead of just trying to do it all on your own. Because there are many records and things to find and group together, you probably aren't going to find a completely compiled list of your family tree. Someone would have to actually put it together and submit it on the web and very few people actually have their entire family tree. I've been working on mine for about 5 years and I've only gotten as far as the 1600's on one side and only the 1800's on the other.

  7. family history FOR FREE, look for your local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints the Mormons

Using this website I got back to 1450
