What is the best and cheapest way to travel from NICE to CHAMONIX in France?

Or maybe someone can suggest any other ALPINE destination which can be conveniently travelled from NICE

i used to live in Val D'Isere which is right next door to Chamonix. the winters were awful but the summers where the greatest.  i always took the sncf and had no problems, the trip was from Paris and it took almost all night to get there. but definitely take the train. if you need more transportation there are always busses, and car rentals.Bonne chance and have a good time.

From Marseille to Briançon - secondary railway -

from Briançon many Southern Alp activities -

Serres-Chevalier eg is great and offers many winter and summer activities

From Nice to Alps - nothing - otherwise train from Nice to Lyon, then to Albertville - then taxi from Albertville to Chamo -
