I'd like to supply my own energy for my ranch. I'm trying to figure out which type of renewable energy is the best, cheapest, and most efficient. Also is it true that you can sell excess energy back to the grid?

  1. All of this questions depends on where you live?  if in plains probably wind turbine power, if by river-hydropower, there is solar energy which I love.

Most unused energy will recycle itself back into the grid if you are tied in to a meter, and if you don't use it yes there will be credit in most cases. Again it depends on where you live. Call or visit your states energy commission or utilties. Some even have rebates to help you with the switch.

  2. Hydro if you have a significant stream passing through your property.

  3. Your two choices for generating electricity that can be "sold back" are wind & PV solar panels

In order to sell back you must be sure that "net metering" is available in your area.

Check out wind maps to determine the viability of a windmill in your area.  You'll also need to consider zoning issues in your area to be sure that you can erect a tower for your windmill.

Solar can be done just about anywhere.  Some installers (geogenix.com - in my area)  claim they can demonstrate "almost positive cash flow" in year one with PV solar.  future positive cash flow will be based on sales of renewable energy credits and the increasing cost of saved energy from conventional sources.

    Windmills are relatively maintenance free.

PVs are maintenance free and have a 25 yr warranty.

A hydro turbine is less effecient in that it is more costly and would require significant annual maintance that blows your profit out of the water (pun intended)
