My 6yr old toy has brown build up on some of her teeth. I want to clean them up at home and I plan to take her to a vet for a cleaning as well but I'd like to know any recommended doggie teeth cleaning products you've all used? thanks

  1. I gotthe peanut flavor Petrodex Natural toothpaste from petco for my puppy. It contains no artificial preservatives or additives. As long as it is for dog (you could go for the organic types), it should be fine. Most dogs like chicken, beef, or peanut butter flavor toothpaste. Also when I bought the dog toothpaste, it came with the toothbrush. Dog's toothbrush are much softer than human toothbrush. It is more gentle on their gum. I brush my (5 months samoyed/chow pup) every night, so he gets used to it. It is most effective if you brush them daily or every other day, and have the vet clean her teeth once a year. Getting raw bones, and toys would also help remove build ups on her teeth.

    Hope this helps

  2. I agree with the person that said raw meaty bones.

Thats just one of the perks from feeding a prey model raw diet.

  3. Raw meaty bones.  I raw feed and never have to clean teeth.

I, personally, detest dentabones.  One of my dogs developed a bowel obstruction after he swallowed the end of one.

  4. DentaBone works miracles!! Seeming as your dog is already 6 years old, she probably wont take well to starting to brush her teeth now. Remember in doggy years, your dog is 42!! Imagine never being introduce to something like that, then someone holding you down and forcing you to have it done, you'd not be too happy!! Give her a dentabone as often as it says to on the package. The brown you see is Tarter, and the vet will scrape this off with a special little tool, your doggy wont like this either. start the dentabone thing now, and maybe slowly ease her into brushing, but you dont need a toothpaste, and if you really want to use one, go buy a "baby toothpaste" as they are floride free and can be swallowed. Thats the best I can think of... Hope it helps!!

P.S ---There was probably an underlying cause of the bowel obstruction, and it was probably not solely the dentabone that did this, and if so, it probably only happens once in  a blue moon.... and how would your dog swallow the whole end of one, without chewing or choking, unless you shoved it down there I just dont get it!! lol

  5. My dog is on the BARF diet which assists a lot in keeping his teeth very clean and white, though i do top up with brushing his teeth once a week.

Some dogs have more acid in their saliva which can bring on plaque and general staining a lot quicker than other breeds.

Before i moved onto the BARF diet i didn't notice any improvements from using the dentisticks or dentibones, they made no difference to his teeth and to me were a con and very expensive.
