Do you really need an immigration lawyer or is that alot of hype? My husband (recently got married) is on a L1-visa for work. Its pretty much always renewable as long as he stays with the company. He is wishing to possibly change companies and we are wanting a green card. We already have a 1 year old daughter and another on the way. He has no criminal record, and works. He has always complied with all laws and has a good standing with his government. So is a Lawyer still needed? Still recommended? Can I just apply with the packet from the website? What in your opinion was the fastest and most beneficial way?

  1. The problem is that the L1 visa is not transferable to another employer, no matter how many years he has worked in the US.  You do need to talk to a reputable lawyer re this.

  2. Why would you take such a big chance with your family's future?  The immigration process can be both complicated and intimidating.

Get the attorney - they'll see mistakes you may have overlooked, identify potential problems that you hadn't thought of, fight for your rights or find alternate paths to permanent residency if your husband's elligibility is challenged.  In general they will guide you smoothly through the process.

Wouldn't it be a shame if you decided to go the "do it yourself" route and really screwed things up?

  3. Hi,

You don't need a lawyer, they charge a lot :(.Remember that you also will need to spend money in his application.  Anyway..You can do it yourself, it's very simple but you have to pay attention to detail to make sure the forms are filled correctly, otherwise USCIS will sent them back to you, then is when it takes forever to get it done.

There are many forms you need to get. I did it myself for my wife. Call USCIS at 1-800-375-5283 and ask them to sent you the package concerning the green card application to request a green card.

They will ask you several questions..no big deal...

    do that ...

    Good luck!
