  1. I've been studying german at my uni for one year, and still very serious about becoming proficient.

    I just don't see how could anyone learn it by himself, it's just too hard.

    Try a language school.


  2. I went to Austria this summer for a month, and before I went I picked up some German language CDs from a really good library. I imported the tracks to my Ipod and listened to them in my free time, on the plane, and while I was there. I learned some essentials, and I think it was helpful. I was pretty surprised at my progression and the sentances I learned.

    I think selfeducation is sufficient to learn basics, and audio CDs in particular teach conversation better than writing and reading. You should give it a try. It does give you a nice foundation and starting point. The library recommended the Michel Thomas language CDs, and I was really impressed by them.

  3. Try the Rosetta Stone language program. The link is below. I have heard that this is the best for learning a language quickly by yourself.
