What is the best any to learn german? what about selfeducation.. does it work?

I've been studying german at my uni for one year, and still very serious about becoming proficient.

I just don't see how could anyone learn it by himself, it's just too hard.

Try a language school.

I went to Austria this summer for a month, and before I went I picked up some German language CDs from a really good library. I imported the tracks to my Ipod and listened to them in my free time, on the plane, and while I was there. I learned some essentials, and I think it was helpful. I was pretty surprised at my progression and the sentances I learned.

I think selfeducation is sufficient to learn basics, and audio CDs in particular teach conversation better than writing and reading. You should give it a try. It does give you a nice foundation and starting point. The library recommended the Michel Thomas language CDs, and I was really impressed by them.

Try the Rosetta Stone language program. The link is below. I have heard that this is the best for learning a language quickly by yourself.
