What is the best area in central London?

I've been trying to plan a vacation and have been looking up hotels in central London, but have no idea which area to stay in...I've noticed that there a alot of different areas that offer hotels (Mayfair, Kings Cross, Piccadilly, Kensington, etc.) I've never been to London, therefore don't know which area is best. I want to be within walking distance to most major attractions, and basically around alot of stuff to do (shopping, bars, museums, etc.) Any suggestions on which areas to narrow in on while searching for hotels?

Westminster/Victoria sound like the best places for you too look at although London is a big city so you will need to use public transport/cabs etc.

South east London. Knife crime, muggers, pollution, crowded city centres.....you'll love it!

London is a large city but with excellent taxi and tube transportation.  If budget is not the issue, I recommend the following in Kensington/Knightsbridge and you will have a fantastic trip!

nowhere is within walking distance of ALL the attractions ... London is big and, for instance, the Tower of London is miles away from Buckingham Palace ... what's important is that you are within easy reach of public transport, for instance a tube station

Kings Cross is a short walk or bus/tube ride from the West End, the major shopping area

Piccadilly is very central in the West End itself

Kensington is further to the west, south of Hyde Park, near to Harrods and some of the major museums (Science, Natural History, Victoria and Albert)

one of the best things to do at the beginning of your stay in London is to take one of the open top bus tours such as

and do all the routes (best not to get off the bus much or otherwise you'll never get to the end) ... this will help you get oriented and from there you can decide which places you want to go back to and look at in more depth
