  1. Actually, the rifle used by the Maryland snipers was actually an AR-15 assault rifle.  I don't have any problems referring to my AR-15 as an assault rifle.  There is no point to trying to play word games, it is what it is.  I take issue with people when they try to take my guns away, but I don't care what they call them.

Call my Uzi a machine of death, I'll smile and thank you for the compliment.  Call my Swedish Mauser a sniper rifle, I'll just say, "Not yet, but I'm practicing!"  I'm proud to own weapons, not sporting rifles.  Yes, handguns are made for one purpose, do I look like I give a care?

/rant off.  Okay, the best assault rifle a civilian can own.  Big subject.  I would have to say an AR-15, simply because of the massive amount of parts and customization options available to you.  A lot of people own these guns, and there's a good reason.  They are accurate, reliable, lightweight, and ergonomic.

Really, the answer to your question is:  The best assault rifle for you to own is the one in your hands.  The one you practice with, the one you have ready to go at a moment's notice.  Find a rifle that fits you, get ammo and a cleaning kit, and practice, practice, practice.

  2. Assuming we are talking about over the counter, semi-automatic rifles here...not special license full auto's.

"Best" in meaning swiss watch quality?

Probably the H&K SL8-6. It's the civilan version of the German G36 assult rifle. I don't k now much about that one though.

"Best" in meaning easiest/cheapest to own, operate and shoot?

    Sad to say...The AK-47.

Goes "bang" every time you pull the trigger. Doesn't care what ammo you feed it. Or how well you take care of it.

This is taking your "assult rifle" requirement into consideration. Yes, there are more accurate rifles at 100 yards..(most anything is), but that's not what your asking about.

  3. Question:  What is the best assault rifle a civilian can own?

Answer:  There is no such thing.  The term 'assault rifle' was coined by the media and anti-gunners to restrict and/or ban a sporting rifle with a certain 'look.'  Is the Ruger Mini 14 an "assault rifle?"  Of course not!  Ruger even markets a ranch-rifle version.  Yet after the Maryland-area sniper incident of 2002 where a Mini 14 was allegedly used this is what appeared in the headlines:

Maryland Legislators Consider Assault Weapon Ban.

Media confuses issues by saying it was a Bushmaster rifle!  Just another ploy to erode our 2nd. Amendment Rights.

So you see, sometimes we are our own worst enemies.  I wish people would lose terms like:  "Assault rifle," "Sniper rifle" and "silencer from their vocabulary.

  4. Yup, "Assault Weapon" is nothing more than a political term crafted by liberals to describe black-finished guns that make them want to c**p their pants.

But as far as magazine-fed light rifles are concerned, theres a million different options to go with.  It's hard to go wrong with an AK-47 or an AR-15 platform.  The AK is CHEAP, rarely jams, and you can still get surplus ammo for a reasonable price.  An AR is accurate, simple to take apart for cleaning, and there are limitless aftermarket customization options for it.  These are your two most popular options.

Other choices are just as good, but it's all a matter of personal preference.  If you want something high-tech, you could pick up an FN FS2000 bullpup.  Compact, accurate, and uses AR-15 magazines.  If your thinking about a pistol caliber rifle, you might be happy with a Beretta Cx4 or a Calico M-900.

Myself, I've been thinking about buying a Kel-Tec SU-16C.  It's an economical carbine with an underfolding stock, a forend that converts into a bipod, and takes AR-15 magazines.  However, it utilizes a traditional rifle grip rather than a pistol grip.

Just research the market carefully and figure out what you like.  Take all things into consideration and make an educated purchase.

  5. When you say license, I will assume that you are talking NFA weapons.  Best is relative.  The argument will go on forever.  The top runners are most often the G3, FAL, M16/AR10, AK47 and variants including HK91, etc..   The term assault rifle is specific and you are excluding some pretty impressive subguns such as the MP5 and the HK51.

The political term assault weapon really doesn't mean anything outside the minds of politicians who are only interested in gun grabbing.

  6. To put the liberal spin to rest, it is good to remember that the term "assault rifle" is not an invention of the liberal press. Ironically, it is actually a term coined by one Adolf Hitler in reference to the rifles previously known as the MKb 42, or Maschinen Karabiner 42, or in English, Machine-Carbine model 1942, and the MP 44, or Maschinen Pistole 44, or Machine-Pistol model 1944. Old "Opa" was impressed with the weapon and decided that it needed a more aggressive name, and decreed that it should be called the "Sturmgewehr", or Assault Rifle.

The liberals only use the term because of its polemic value, not out of any actual knowledge of the term or the subject matter. Their contributions to any conversations about firearms are best handled by relegating them to the sewer system where they belong.

As for the best semi-auto look-alike a civilian can own, opinion varies so much on that subject that I'm not even going to go there. Suffice it to say that it is best to shop around and find out for yourself about the various choices out there. Get thee to a gun shop or gun show, and pick several of them up, see how the handle for you, and ask LOTS of questions.

  7. ak47

  8. What caliber do you want? .223? .308?

I like my bushmaster in .223, and I like my friends FN FAL in .308.

The .308 has a longer range, but it more $ to shoot. The Bushmaster is lighter but has a shorter range. The debate could go on for eternity.

I think you should fondle them all and find one that feels right for you.

  9. I prefer the M-14 myself.*

  10. a 223 bushmaster
