  1. For playing most avi contained movies (particularly from the torrent world) the K-Lite Codec pack will be ideal. It's designed exactly for that and is free. I'd recommend getting the lite version unless you really need all the specialist codecs (it'll just clog up your PC and potentially cause some conflicts)

    It's free from here:

There's really **** loads. You know the *.avi extension is just a container? meaning it's not a filetype in itself, but (like *.mov) can use h.264, divx, any of about a hundred different codecs. Where as *.rmvb is always going to just be a realmedia video file (as I understand)

There's great guides on the web.

Wikipedia's always the place I start

and there's a pretty impressive bit of information on some particular codecs on techarena

Everyone at the end of the day is going to tell you it depends on what you're using it for. Simpsons, for example, will use one codec (because it is cell shaded- solid, limited colours) while full colour video will use another. Different formats specialising in the latter will be better for fast motion, while others will resolve more detail in slower/stationary images..

Some formats are more efficient at higher compression rates, but again, you need to know what you're looking for in a codec, if you want to archive in very high quality, it's going to be a different format again.

  2. DIVX, if you use the free movie player VLC Media Player, it comes with most of the Avi Codex already installed, and works very well.
