What is the best bait for a RAT trap, not a mouse trap.?

Question

I have a family of rats in my back yard. Now my dog is dying in the hospital and they think it may be a disease she caught from the rats. We put out traps - they spring them, ignore them, walk around them. Poops all around the traps and no rats caught. I dont want to use poison in case one dies in the yard and my other dog gets sick.

bird feeders. I was told to use peanut butter in the traps and

that got rid of them.

I've used peanut butter on a cotton ball using a rat trap to catch some red squirrels that were in our attic eating our wiring.  It seemed to to work because I caught and killed six of them.  Supposedly, the teeth get caught in the peanut butter and the cotton ball.  This may help with the rats too, since they have those long pointy teeth.  Definitely try using whatever bait you choose smooshed on the cotton ball and see if that works.  Good luck.

for a better trap ,try this trick .take an ear of corn and poke a  pencil in each end [ like corn holders ] lightly coat the Cobb with peanut butter.then get a five gallon bucket and fill it half full with water ,and set the corn contraption on top of the bucket ,when the rat walks out to eat  ,it will roll off in the water and drown .dig a hole and dump the rats in it ,for a less mess ,control method. p.s don't forget to build steps to the top of the bucket.

Nordic rats -- "sewer rats" -- are carnivorous, or omnivorous. Most "country" rats, the ones that damage crops, are mostly vegetarians, they like grains, tubers, fruit, as well as insects. For Nordic rats, a piece of cooked meat or fat is good bait. Take care, such bait may also attract cats. For country rats, we found any combination of wholewheat bread crust, raisins, peanut butter, fresh pumpkin or squash pith (including seeds) worked every time.
