  1. Depends on where you're fishing and how big the tuna are. The small ones taken off southern California (5-30 pounds or so) will eat anchovies or sardines, while the bigger ones taken south in Mexican waters will take larger baits: mackerel, scad, humboldt squid, flying fish, and even pufferfish. But I've heard of plenty of 200+ pounders taken on sardines, so overall, I'd have to say that's the best bait for yellowfin of any size. But like any fish, they get into moods where they'll prefer another bait, so you have to be flexible.

    I've caught more yellowfin on sardines than any other bait.

    In other parts of the world where the forage fish are different, you'll get a different answer.
