Southern California is the hot bed for surfers, there are litterally hundreds of beaches to surf, take a lesson from a pro and you can be a great surfer like Kelly Slater.

If you live near LA, contact Mary Setterholm's surf academy.   The beaches in Hermosa and Redondo are fine for beginners.  If you live in Orange County, Bolsa Chica is a good place to learn.  Corky Carrol Surf School is on the beach a little south of where the entry gate is located.  If you live down south near San Diego, go up to Leucadia and take a lesson at Leucadia Surf school.

I learned at Trestles, South Orange County. Waves are nice and people are a lot more mellow than up here in malibu.
