  1. Honey or Molasses.*

  2. When I killed Black Bear in Maine, one of the guys that I hunted with baited 2 days before our arrival. He went to a local bakery thrift shop, and bought day old donuts and pastries. Often he would get 2 day old stuff for free. He then warmed molasses and covered the delightful dish of yumminess(sorry, I'M a cop, its a donut thing), and this attracted a 400 pound Bear that I harvested with a 12 gauge.

Many things will work. As you have already been told, it is the smell that is important. This is what worked for me on 3 different hunting trips, and it worked for me.

Also if you barbecue a lot, save the grease from the grill cup. It usually will contain barbecue sauce and fat. This will also work.

    Good Luck

  3. popcorn works well and is light to pack in, I've also used day old pastries from the surplus bread store, butcher scraps from the local butcher ( most states do not allow game animal scraps as bear bait, only domestic animal) also, I know one guy who puts honey in a tin can, and sets it on a sterno heat source while he is on his stand, being omnivoris, a bear will go after just about anything edible. The key is to start baiting as soon as it is legal (check local laws) and keep a constant foodsource at the bait site to draw in the animals.

    Good luck

  4. A bear bait station doesn’t need lots of bait just lots of smell.   Metal 30 gallon drum with many holes punched through for scent dispersal chain to a tree works good. Bacon grease, rotten apples, rotten fish, grain with molasses etc are all good for bears. You just need the smell so two gallons of bait per 30 gallon drum will last for days. Maybe your local store has spoiled meat or garden produce you can get for free. Dog food and cat food works well esp. the fish canned cat food. If you have left over oil used to fry fish that works also. You can buy a can of thick cooking grease heat it up and add a can of sardines, let cool down and then you have a paste bait that rain will not destroy.

You can lead them to the station by dragging a rag soaked in the bait for a day. Just drag the rag trough the woods towards the bait container. Rain can erase the scent, other wise it will be there for a couple days.

  5. dunkin' donuts

  6. Hunt you some apple trees and pick you some apples! Honey Buns is the best, but illegal in most states, You can feed slop from restaurants if it is legal in your state! You might want to check your states Game Laws!*
