Question:

What is the best bedding for rats?

I posted a question on here yesterday about how I'm going to be raising 2 baby rats soon. I got a lot of great answers (thank-you!) but there is one thing I'm not clear of, which is the bedding. I took the advice that I will not be using wood chips/wood shavings because there is no way I'm harming the babies. The cage that I bought is a metal one, two story's. I was lucky to get it on sale for $49 at the top pet shop in town.

So what are my options for bedding that wont put the babies in harms way, what is your recommendation?

  1. I use cat litter as my vet recommended it. She said it absorbs the rats urine and helps chest problems, so we decided to use that for our rats. We used to use Aspen but the vet said that it was bad for respiritory infections. But when I looked it (beddings) up on the internet, one of the websites said that Aspen was a good choice. I guess it is all just a matter of opinion!

There is many other types of bedding though, Carefresh, Aspen or Yesterday`s News which are all great bedding's. Always remember, never use pine or cedar as bedding!

Here is a few websites that will give you more information on different types of beddings:

I hope this helps. Good luck!
