I've found a new found passion for taking photos, but I'm still completely new to everything. I want to learn more but need a better camera to get started with, right now I just have a Canon Powershot 430.

Any tips on where I should look/what types of options I should look for?

  1. Canon Rebel XSi or the new Nikon D90.  If your also not willing to spend over 1000 to get a decent SLR setup. The Canon Powershot G9 is a great camera, its like the pro's point and shoot.

  2. The best option is a digital SLR. The Nikon D40 seems to be the best buy in a new DSLR just now, but any of the models from Nikon, Canon, Olympus, or Pentax are good. Which is best is a matter of personal needs and preferences.

If a DSLR is too much for you at this time, look for a point-and shoot with more manual controls. The camera should have aperture priority (Av), shutter priority (Tv) and fully manual modes, so you can learn how the different exposure parameters affect the look of the photo. Canon has a number of good models with these features, such as the A570. You'll also find more elaborate point&shoots, such as various superzoom cameras, with manual control options. One disadvantage to the P&S cameras is that the manual controls are more complicated to use than on a DSLR.

  3. Katrina G,

I would say the Canon 5D.

It is a little old but that allows it to offer a phenomenal "price to performance" ratio.

You won't out grow it anytime soon. Stop throwing away money on "disposable" digital point and shoot cameras.
