This is going to be my first bike and the ability to find it used or cheap would be best. I need it to be under 9 grand if it's new, but I would prefer a bike under 2000 dollars.

uh.. most likely not.. if you wanna do highway speeds with a dual sport, to my knowledge the only ones capable of it (of course other then bmw, or ktm, but that's well out of your price range) is a klx/klr 650...

i have no knowledge of either personally, might need to re-ask about those specific bikes so someone could comment on whether they are highway-worthy or not... i'm going to have to assume the v storm is.... if the drz is, that'd be pushing the minimum limits really... (if you wanted to do some mods to it, i'm sure you could get it highway worthy if it isn't when it's stock)

  2. A bike less the 500cc will run ok on the freeways.

The DRZ400 is an excellent choice for a duel sport, it is strong it will do great at freeway speeds. it is maneuverable, and probably most important it is dependable and gets near 80MPG. You really couldnt go wrong with this bike.

The XR650L is another great duel sport bike, it is extremly strong, gets good mileage, however when compared to the drz it is taller, heavier and not as easy to maneuver.

Truth be told, you really cant go wrong with any of the duel sport bikes form suzuki, kawasaki, honda, or yamaha. It all depends on which one you feel most comfortable on and which one you like the best.
