  1. Trek, I bought one last summer, and I ride it everyday in the summer since I live in Wisconsin. THe bike was about 3oo dollars. No problems, overall a nice bike ( Trek 3700)

  2. I second Jason's answers. There are so many bike brands now and there's no "best brand". It depends on what you want to do "everyday", where you live, and what kind of distances.

The parts of your bike are where the real value of your bike is and also the heart of how your bike functions. Brand names tend to be just frames these days as they build their bikes with other brands of components (Cane Creek, Shimano, Tru Vativ, SRAM).

Unfortunately, the components are what makes it difficult to say which brand is superior for what use, because they too come in a variety of quality and performance.

If I had to put a name on it, I'd actually say Specialized. Their bikes tend to have great median components. From stock to purchase, Specialized usually outfits their rides with great parts that'll last and are easily upgraded/replaced if needed. Their retail price is also pretty reasonable, whereas Treks are overpriced (a $300 Trek is probably worth more like $250).

Though right now, for any beginner road cyclist, I'd recommend the Schwinn Circuit. It's under $600 at most stores/online, and it's outfitted with great Shimano/Tru-vativ parts. It's also pretty light weight with it's aluminum frame.

  3. "Which is a better bike, a Trek or a Specialized?

Or Cannondale or Orbea or Scott or Schwinn or Cervelo. We're asked "Which brand is better?" almost daily. While each brand has its diehard fans, we can't answer the question. It's not because of any political reason, but because it's not the right question to ask--you're buying a bicycle, not a brand. .."

  4. There are a huge number of good bike brands. It would really be hard to say one brand is better than another. Whatever you do don't buy a bike from a department store. That's probably not a good bike. Go to your local bike shop. A good fit for comfort is the most important thing.
