What is the best birth control for a 16 year old girl other than "the pill"?

My 16 year old daughter has recently told me that she and her boyfriend are having s*x. We've been having "s*x talks" for awhile and I have drilled the importance of condoms in her head. But she's a typical teenager who knows everything and said they use them sometimes. I'm completely terrified that she's going to become pregnant and I want to put her on birth control. The problem is that I know she wouln't take oral contraception properly (She'd constantly forget). I did some research on IUD's and I think that would be great, but I don't know if she's too young to get one. Does anyone have experience with this?

  1. I believe to get the Mirena she would've already had to of had a baby so that's out.

How about the Depo Provera shot? I'm on that now after my second child and I absolutely love it. I did all the research and even though alot of women don't like it, i still decided to go ahead with it. I'm glad I did. I haven't had a period since March and I haven't experienced any weight gain. Its a shot once every 3 months.

  2. Nothing is fail-safe, so you might as well start making plans for when she gets pregnant, not if.

Meanwhile, I don't like the idea of an IUD for a 16 year old.  I'd try the patch, plus stressing alternatives to actual intercourse before she's out of high school and they both have jobs with health insurnace.  If you're sympathetic and understanding, it won't sound so much like nagging.

  3. The best way to not get pregnant is to not have s*x. If she's to irresponsible to make him wear a condom or remember birth control than maybe she needs a pregnancy scare to knock some sense in to her. I'm not trying to be cruel, but that is just irresponsible. She shouldn't be having s*x. It's your job as her mother to make sure she isn't doing things that are possible harmful, this is considered one of those things. If you know she isn't ready, then don't allow it.

  4. She can get an implant. It prevents pregnancy far more than the pill and it really works. A friend of mine has it and she has never had a problem.

Good luck to you and your daughter.

You could also get her the Depro Provera shot. That's an injection. I know much less about the shot, however it is used widely by millions of women, so I can't imagine there's anything wrong with it.

  5. I have never had an IUD because Ive heard they cause some problems.. but during my high school years I was on Depro Provera shot. You get a shot in the hip once every 3 months. Its very effective!! My now husband and I while in high school never used condoms and I never had a pregnancy scare! I also loved it because I never had to worry about starting my period in school or worrying about tampons/pads while playing sports!!

  6. IUD has had a lot of good press lately. You can always call and just ask a few questions without actually going to the doctor and tell her all the options and let her choose. IUD she won't have to try to remember. Shots can be painfull and aren't as effective. I would suggest an IUD. If shes responsible enough to come to you with this then she should be okay to make the choice herself. There are a lot of options out there you don't have to give them all to her just your top 3 and let her pick which shes interested in. If she really is set on the pill make a deal that you see her take the pill every day if you are worried she won't do it properly.

  7. The patch is effective and is once a month.

  8. You can now get a contraceptive patch you wear on your skin but you have to remember to put it on.  You can have a contraceptive injection - that last a few months so no rememvering for a while.  Try to push the condom issue more as it is the only way to protect against sexually transmitted infections.

  9. even if she does go on the pill or uses an iud it would be better that they still use a condom as well .

call your clinic tomorrow and ask to talk to an RN they should be able to tell you. but also check out all off the side effects, some of the side effects can be really messed up.

i know a lot of people like getting the shots (this might be a better option then the iud).

    good luck

  10. She has told you she is having s*x and she doesnt use condoms all the time?Well be PREPARED to be a grandmother or grandfather and do NOT complain to her VER ONE BIT when it happens and it is GOING TO thanks to you.

YOU not her ,but YOU are the parent.QUit letting them be alone together. The BEST form of birth control is NO s*x.She thinks she knows it all?Well how about raising a baby does she know about that yet?YOU KNOW she is ignorant about the responsibilities that acompany s*x.The thing is SOCIETY has made s*x into a RECREATION instead of procreation thing and try to AVOID the responsibilities that come withit. What if she doesntget pregnant but he dumpes her?

She gets the reputation of a loose and easy wh-re whether you and/or her  think she deserves it or not. What happens if she gets pregnant and dumped?Or gets a disease?Do you KNOW that condoms do NOTHING to prevent herpes?

DO you know that ALL birth control has a failure rate?

It is time to step up to the plate and start SUPERVISING your 16 yr old CHILD.She is NOT an adult, and YOU ARE.YOU know she does NOT KNOW everything she needs to know yet and it is YOUR job to protect her from doing stupid things which you have failed to do in this situation hon.If she gest pregnant it is YOUR fault.YOU are the parent.

  11. if you wait 10-14 days after your period, i heard it lowers the chances of getting pregnant.

  12. I use the Ortho Evra Patch. You only have to remember it once a week and then go patch free the week of your period. I started on the patch when I was 21 I am now 26 and love it. The only things that you really have to worry about is getting it stuck on your clothing but I have found the using baby powder over the area after applying the patch has helped with the sticky border issue. I love it and have tried "the pill" but this just works the best for me. Hope this helped!

  13. the patch! you stick on you (leave it on) for i believe 28 days and take it off for about a week (routine patch bc).

  14. Read this to her.

Put an aspirin between your knees and hold it there.

If you have s*x at your age, you have to think of the consequences. pregnancy is for 18 years.  No birth control method is 100%. It cost about $120,000 to raise a child from birth to age 18.

Your entire life changes. Your friends will have little to nothing to do with you. Your child will suffer unless you are very wealthy. You need to educate yourself, get a good job, get married then think about marriage and having children.

I teach and I see kids everyday whose mother had them at 14, 15, and 16 years of age. They come to school in "T" shirts and flip flops when it's 30 degrees outside. Why? Mom can't afford to take them to Wal-Mart to buy a coat. I know this because I end up going Wal-mart to buy coats for to many of my third graders out of my own pocket. Being a parent is a very tough job. Having s*x puts you in a different league, I promise you, you get preggo and your loving boyfriend will walk out on you. All you need do is read the other questions on this site about girls that are trying to figure out how to tell mom they're pregnant.

  15. iud are supposed to last 5 years and personally i think it is really un normal not to have a period. so i would try talking the condom thing again. however condoms make you fell like you are having s*x with a trash bag so i doubt it will work. get her the birth control patch or something or maybe take her to a daycare and let her have to take care of a screaming newborn and i bet shell remember that birth control.

  16. wow... s*x at 16 and ur ok with it.... maybe tell her to not have s*x or accept outcome of s*x
