I haven't had luck with boilies.  Canned corn on a hook works well but with increased fishing pressure on my local stream I have switched to dough bait.  I use a #6 treble hook hair tied to a #6 bait holder.  The dough bait is packed around the treble hook and the bait holder below (about half an inch) is left bare.  Danny Fairbrass gives an excellent demonstration on how to tie a hair rig.  The fish literally hook themselves on the bare bait holder.  Yesterday son landed one perfectly hooked in the bottom lip with the treble hook dangling free.  The pickup was so light I thought bluegill had picked the bait.

The dough bait used was made from canned mustard greens thickened with oatmeal with peanut butter a little cherry flavor and salt to taste.

I tend to go with fruity flavours in the summer and something a bit meaty/spicy in the winter. I'm not too sure whether the carp are picky about it though.

I use either

Sweetcorn + Sweetcorn to feed the area.

Maggot + Pellets to feed up the area

Maggot + Maggot to feed up the area

Pineapple Boilie + Maggot (only two every five mins and i got a 3lb tench)
