The brilliance of this book doesn't grab you straight away, it creeps up on you the further you read. It's very moving in a completely unique way, not at all obvious in how it affects you.

I read a few books a week, and this is the first one that has surprised me for a while in terms of writing style and subtlety.

My favourite is A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man, by James Joyce. I first read it last year, I wasn't incredibly impressed, but I feel that a second reading has made it my favourite novel. Totally beautiful.

Best I've read for the first time this year was probably The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas.

  25. There are a few books I've read that were very good this year:

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. I loved it! It's a fantasy. It's so hard to explain though!

Another really good book was A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly. It's a historical fiction set in 1906. It's about the murder of Grace Brown. It was VERY good. I've never really liked historical fiction, but this one was awesome.

How To Kill A Rock Star by Tiffanie Debartolo is an edgy romance. It was very good. I felt like I was right there with the characters the whole time.

The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray by Chris Wooding is a sci-fi I think. It was very creepy in some parts.

Impulse by Ellen Hopkins is a realistic fiction about these three teens who are in an asylum becasue they all tried to kill themselves. It's written in verse.

The Sight by David Clement-Davies. This is an amazing fantasy. I can't begin to explain it...

I would recommend all of these books.
