I am n the market for a sewing machine, but I am a beginner, and don't want to spend alot of money on my first machine. I don't want it for heavy duty sewing, mostly to sew clothes for my daughter. Thank you for any and all input.

  1. the brand that i first got was "Singer"

  2. I have been sewing for many years and like most I was raised with singer machines, but what was a good singer machine then is not the same now. Many companies have merged with others or other countries are making them cheaper instead of better. Right now I have a brand new brother cost me $179, bought $80 worth of extra feet, and lots of bobbins, I planned on later buying a embroidery machine by them. Not sure now, I am having problems with the bobbin winder. Brother wont back me. My white/viking ($1500. is great, 17 yrs old, never a repair. but...because viking merged with it, all the accessories are too expensive. Check comparisons sites, Dont buy just cause its cheap. You do get what you pay for sometimes. I wish you luck, I am now looking for another machine and I dont know where to turn myself.

  3. My first sewing machine was an inexpensive Brother machine. I got it when I was in middle school, becuase my parents didn't want to buy me an expensive one in case I outgrew my interest in sewing or I broke the machine. I think they payed like $120 for mine, and it lasted me a good  7 years until I upgraded this past Christmas, and it still runs beautifully.

Try looking at this one: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d...

Its very similar to my first machine. Brothers are great for beginners, as they're easy to use, require minimal maintenence, and last forever!

Best of luck with your sewing!

  4. I got a Singer Simple for Christmas last year.  It's really light and easy to use.  I'm also a beginner.  Found it for about $100 online at Walmart here:

It comes with an instructional DVD.

  5. I really like Janome, I have a Janome and the great thing about it is that it has a top loading bobbin which makes threading your machine 100 times easier compared to a side loading bobbin. There are a wide variety of styles and you could find a really basic machine and the company is one of the best in the world!

    Here's their site

  6. I like Kay's answer.

  7. Here's a link for sewing machines withbuyers ratings.  You can decide how much you want to spend.  There is a few that will thread the needle too.  Good luck!

  8. http://www.cet.com/~pennys/faq/smfaq.htm is an excellent starting point.  Brand isn't nearly as important as reliability, repairability and good stitching.  Every brand has produced a few lemon models, and a brand that was reliable in one decade may not necessarily be reliable in another.  If you must go with a new, bargain machine, I'd suggest Janome; Kenmore machines seem to be relabeled Janome.

Suggested reading: John Giordano: The Sewing Machine Book

Carol Ahles: Fine Machine Sewing (esp. first and last few chapters).

If you're on a budget, I'd definitely be looking for a used machine.  Much more value for your money.

  9. Singer makes a good one for 100$.  Singer is a good brand, and as a beginner, you don't need all the fancy stitch settings.

  10. I've been machine sewing for a half century. I started with a Singer treadle machine and have worked my way though various other Singers over the years (because I outgrew them and not that they gave up on me). Your daughter will need trousers hemmed and denims done so get something that can handle the heavier duty work so you won't be disappointed down the road.
