Tanqueray is a "I'm trendy and know the name of a brand of liquor" gin (see: Absolut, Grey Goose), and Bombay Sapphire is, in my opinion, not really a gin.  

I know several young-ish people who like gin.  It's got flavor, unlike normal vodka, but not too much flavor, unlike the over-flavored fruity vodkas.  Certainly I don't think anyone outside of the UK drinks it as an 'lower-class drink', so people might think you're putting on airs by drinking it, but in that case you should just emphasize you like the subtle juniper flavor.

Plymouth is the best mixing gin. It mixes very well in everything.

It is not an old man's drink by any means.
