  1. it depends on the price. Yamaha, Alvarez, Ibanez, and Ovation all make fine guitars for around $300.00 with case. i wouldnt go much under this price if you want to use it for a while. I have personal experience with ovation, Ibanez and Alvarez, and they are great guitars for the money.

If you can't play at all, go to a music store and have a sales person play every guitar in your price range for you and listen to them. pick the one that sounds and looks best to you.

things to look for at this price

    > solid wood top - not that important, as a good laminate top will sound just about as good at this price range. also a laminate top will be less likely to warp (important if you are taking it to camp.

    > a hard shell or good soft shell case - CRITICAL!!! it will keep your guitar in good shape and make it so you have to tune it less often.

    > Tuner - so you can play in tune. many guitars now have built in digital tuners (the ovation celebrity at this price hange is acoustic electric, includes the tuner and can be plugged in.

  2. This is all about money at this point. Either you have the money for a great accoustic or you have the money for an average... Or you should just save a little longer. Be sure to spend at least six hundred if you want a life long friend. If not spend less and it will be gone in a few years at best! Once you have a guitar search and find fretpro, it's a free and great easy and fun way to learn the guitar! It's a little game that teaches you all the notes and their possition on the neck, it helped me a lot!

  3. There is no "best".  After you figure out what you can afford, there are two things that you need to consider:

    1) what type of music will you be playing

    2) what feels and sounds best for YOU

And also let's say you like a certain band.  If you are trying to sound JUST like them, then you need the same type of guitar they use to get THAT sound.

That said, go to a store that will allow you to play the instruments.  Most Guitar Center-type stores have an enclosed room with multiple guitars that are "self-serve".  Try your favorite songs on the different guitars.  They WILL sound different.

And just buy the best you can afford.  Good guitars are an investment, so they will almost always retain or increase in value.

    Good Luck!

  4. Good, you want to start, but dont get the best one in the world yet!! Best to buy a classical to start with, just for a while, as your fingers will need to get used to holding the frets. because the strings are nylon the tension is less, and so hurt your fingertips less than steel strings. when you are able to do a thing or two with this then is a good time to look into a steel string, but I reckon that if you get a wizz bang guitar even then you do yourself a dis-service, as your practice on a lesser "axe" will give you the benefit of extreme ease when you are able to pick up something good.

There are lots of good brands, when you start out it is more important that you are playing than what you play on. If you learn on a c**p guitar it will make your fingers, wrists etc a bit more agile, and when you do get something better your ability will seem amplified by the ease of playing on a well made instrument.

I cant even remember the brand I started on! but now play Fender acoustic, Quite happily :)

  5. I don't know if you live in the UK, but by most standards Tanglewood's are brilliant!

  6. If you have a friend or family member that has been playing acoustic guitar for a while, by all means bring him or her along with you when you go shopping acoustic guitar.

  7. spectrum

  8. a Gibson or a Fender... they are the best

  9. There is no "best" brand.  That's like asking what's the best brand of running shoe.

However, there are several excellent brands:

    Ovation or Applause

    Yamaha

    Fender

    Gibson

    Epiphone

    Takamine

    Ibenez

The main thing to look for is a spruce top.  Real spuce, not a spruce laminate would be best.

Keep the price above $250 to ensure a quality instrument.

  10. takamine

  11. personally id go with either an ibanez, washburn, or epiphone. the washburn idol series can give you some quality guitars for under $500 (if ur american)
