DDR 3 SDRAM (double-data-rate three synchronous dynamic random access memory) promises power consumption reduction upto 30% as compared with DDR 2 due to 90nm fabrication process. It can be overclocked upto 1.575 (maximum limit).

It has 8 bit deep prefetch buffer, as compared to DDR2 4 bit buffer.

DDR3 modules can transfer data at 800-1600 MHz with cycle time of only 10 - 5 ns only!! as compared to DDR2 with 400-800 MHz.

So DDR3 is much faster than DDR2 . Your computer speed will side by side dependent on your processors cache, much faster if the processors L2 cache and L1 are bigger in memory.

(MHz clock rate is the rate at which the memory performs I/O operations, in DDR3 it can be 1600 milliion data transfers per second).

In market DDR3 are the latest and therefore prices have not fallen much, DDR2 is $100 less than DDR3.

I prefer Crucial brand memory as it has never let me down (used it in a Dell Inspiron, Dell Dimension, and currently in a MacBook Pro) and it can run less than half of the cost of the manufacturer's memory.

If you go to the Crucial website, it will not only explain the differences to you, but it will also offer a small download that will can your system and tell you exactly what kind of memory you need along with the different brands and pricing options.

Oh... and some charge more simply because THEY CAN. : )
