I just read an entire article on this in the bulletin my mex car insurance company sent out last week.  I'll post the link below.  I think it depends on whether you are calling the US from a pay phone or a cell phone, there are different kinds of calling cards for each. The article tells about both kinds.

what about an international callback number? We have friends in Baja that use that to call us and they say the rates are even better than what you'd get with a calling card.

I was in Villahermosa Tabasco, the only long distance card i could find without going into the heart of the city was a Telmex card, Its 30 pesos for I think 5-10 minutes, but if you are just a tourist 30 pesos is 3 dollars and its no big hit to your wallet. I think they have more expensive ones but i never needed that much time.

Buy it there, that is your best bet.  We bought them here before we left last year and they didn't work there.  Buying them there saves you allot of headaches and most of them are for international calling.
