  1. Hmm. first time film maker, you didn't mention which kind of cinematographer you want to be, a pro-movie like one, or just a very high-end high def home editor. There are many video cameras, but you seem like you want to go in the role in film-making. Why start at beginner?, jump straight to pro. You should go with the Sony hdr-fx1, it's around 4,000$, but is in high-def, but it doesn't have any xlr ( microphone ) inputs. You many also want to consider the canon xl2 is about 3,300$, and is about the same, but a little bigger, and doesn't use the high-def format. it shoots standard, but can record in the 1080i and 24ps rate, which is very convinient. Here are some links that you may want to consider.

    http://www.amazon.com/Canon-XL2-MiniDV-C...

that is the canon xl2, from canon obviously

    http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HDR-FX1-Defin...

and that is the sony hdr-fx1, obviously from sony

each is a high-end device, and are considered professional cameras. However, if you just want a consumer, high-def camcorder you many want to go with the following:

    http://www.amazon.com/Sanyo-VPC-HD2-Defi...

    ( long name)

oh, and i think high definition is great, and 24fps is good too,

    Good Luck,
