  1. The Environmental Protection Agency's website has a nifty search tool that can tell you which cars have the best fuel economy by size class and year:  http://www.fueleconomy.gov/f*g/byMPG.htm

Definitely go for a 4-cylinder car, a midsize family sedan if you need the room, or a compact if you don't.  I would suggest a conventionally-powered 4-cylinder car as the first choice.  Go for a hybrid as a second choice ONLY if you can find one at sticker price and has a big Federal Tax Credit, like the 32mpg Ford Escape Hybrid 2WD which qualifies for a whopping $3000 tax break from Uncle Sam.

As far as hybrid batteries go, the reliability is NOT a concern.  Typical battery warranties for new hybrids sold in the U.S. is 8 years / 100,000 miles, 10 years / 150,000-miles in states with California emissions standards.  If it fails before then, the carmaker has to replace it for you free.

The only problem is you won't be able to find one.  Waiting lists for hybrids like the Escape or Prius are like 3-6 months all over the country.

  2. Toyota Prius.

  3. it depends what size car you need. They have the chevy cobalt that gets around 30mpg and the ford focus in the 30 mpg range. and they you have the little larger cars like the ford five hundred that gets around 24 mpg but any car with the 4 cylinder or v6 5 speed would be good on gas

  4. If you want to keep the SUV feel, you can always get the Ford Escape hybrid that gets 34 mpg. http://www.fordvehicles.com/suvs/EscapeH... and if you want to classier, there's the Escape's cousin, the Mercury Mariner hybrid: http://www.mercuryvehicles.com/mariner/g...

Oh and if you can't afford a hybrid the normal Escape and Mariner get up to 28 mpg itself.

If you want to go cheaper, there's the 2008 Ford Focus that gets up to 35 mpg: http://www.fordvehicles.com/cars/focus/?...

  5. Stand in line, most of the dealers are out of small cars, and wont give you anything for your truck.

Id only look at the cars that get 35mpg. Hyndai Accent, Toyota Yaris, Kia Rio. Get cruise installed you will get close to 40mpg on the highway.

Stay away from Hybrids, all but the Prius, onlt get good MPG in town, and the same as the ones listed above on the highway.

The Prius costs more than you will save in fuel over a 5 year period. Batteries for hybirds can cost 2 grand to replace.
