  3. Yu-Gi-Oh

  4. Disclaimer:  The only card game I've been personally involved with is Pokemon.  My answer is based solely on what I have witnessed being played.

Given that, I'd say that the most popular card game is indeed Magic:The Gathering.  I've been to several conventions, and the attendance at Magic games is easily 4-5 times any other game.  One respondent mentioned the "slight rise" of Pokemon.  I've seen a huge rise in Pokemon lately.  Every week, I'm signing up 5-10 new players, many of which are actually leaving Yu-Gi-Oh! to come and play Pokemon.  The most common complaint I hear about YGO is that the format has become rather stagnant, and at highly competitive levels, everyone is playing slight variants of the same deck.  Again, I have no experience with it personally, I'm only answering based on what people are telling me.

And don't make the mistake of thinking of Pokemon as only a kid's game - our Masters age division (15 and up) is always bigger than our Junior (10 and under) and Senior (11-14) age divisions combined!

  5. If you mean a trading card game:

I'd say it comes down to YGO and Magic; Pokemon has lost a lot of appeal. To me, Magic is based more and strategy and technique and getting to know how to use your deck. YGO may seem that way at first, but in the end it comes out to who has the better cards. In terms of prices, I believe Magic is also less expensive; since it's an old game, you can often find garage sales selling old cards, which is how I've found most of mine.

However, YGO is more popular at this point; some people have never heard of magic. It might be better to start playing YGO because of the availability of players.

If you mean card games in general, I would suggest Bang!. It is a dedicated deck card game, meaning all players draw from the same deck (so no trading/buying/selling of cards); it can be played with 2-12 players.

  6. Currently, I think that YGO has a stronger following.

But all time, Magic the Gathering is the best.  It has seen the rise and fall and slight rise of Pokemon.  It has seen the downfall of many other games.  VS, Showdown, Raw Deal, Doomtown.  It's been around for 15 years now and is still going strong.

YGO has a lot of (for the sake of a better word) younger players.  I don't mean to sound rude but that's what I generally see.  Of course there are a lot of older players out there too but most of them are young.

Pokemon was really hot during the late 90's but then faded out.  Now, it's starting to get semi hot but I don't think that it will ever be as popular as it was when it first came out.

I don't know much about the other games out there (Bakugan, etc) so I will not comment on them.

But everyone will have their own opinions and I respect their opinions (as I hope people respect mine).  My opinion is Magic: the Gathering.  I just like it more.
