  1. the best one is blu ray discs

after blu ray disc then comes high definition discs

    after this DVD comes than

    CD's

  2. Taiyo Yuden is probably the best brand of cd/dvd to burn to as far as little degradation over the years. You'll have to keep an eye out for sales on those, but they are worth it. We only use that brand for home movies and backups, btw.

  3. First off, I am making the assumption that you are burning home movies, because copying commercial movies is illegal.

Prices given here are from Amazon, but most disks are widely available, and you may be able to find better prices.  Also, bulk buying (such as a spindle of 50 or 100 disks) can bring the per-disk price down considerably.

The basic types of DVD are:

    - DVD-R and DVD+R, capacity 4.7Gb.  Some recorders/players perfer the +R, others the -R, and some will work with either one.  Check the manuals for your equipment to see if it has any limitations.  Under 50 cents.

    - DVD-RW and DVD+RW, same as above except they can be erased and re-recorded multiple times.  This makes them handy for recording a late-night show that you want to watch, but not keep.  $3.

-DVD+R DL, capacity 8.5Gb - similar to DVD+R above, except that they are "dual layer" disks with twice the capacity.  Most commercial disks (rental movies) are dual layer - many even say so in the "fine print".  There may also be DVD-R DL disks, but I have never seen one.  Many DVD recorders (including computer drives) cannot record DL disks - check your equipment before you invest heavily in DL disks.  $2

BD-R Blu-Ray recordable disks - 25Gb for single-layer, 50Gb for dual-layer.  Uncommon and expensive, and you will certainly need a special drive to record these.  $17.50 SL, $32 DL

    BD-RE - as above, but re-writable. $40 SL, $44 DL

DVD-RAM, capacity 4.7Gb single layer, 9.4Gb dual layer - similar to DVD-RW/DVD+RW, these are DVDs that can be written to and erased multiple times.  Not all recorders can record to them, and not all players can read them, so check your equipment specs. $9
