  1. Cologne (Koeln) or Duesseldorf are the New York and LA of Germany. Hip, stylish and lots of fun. There are several Universities in the area so the majority of the population is in the 20 to early thirties age range. Plus, you'll still have some great sites to see.

  2. I would recommend Cologne. When I went during undergrad i stayed there.

i heard that about Duesseldorf. Isn't that where all the models come from? They have a fashion street that's similar to roedeo drive in LA and fifth ave in NYC. I think it's like king street or something. It's the top city for German fashion.

  3. amsterdam lol

  4. Heidelberg is known for the University there. Beautiful Castle on the hill above the town. Situated along the romantic Nekar River. You are bound to run into college students there and make friends as you go.

Colonge is also very nice, but I have only visited there once, and wasn't aware of the college scene. But the Cathedral is fantastic!!!

You really can't go wrong when visiting Germany. Where ever you visit, you will find people to direct you to other places to see. Enjoy!

  5. If you really want to improve your German, the best places to go are where you're most likely to need to use German--in other words, where there are few foreigners and where the locals are less likely to know English.  I'd go to eastern Germany; in the GDR, people tended to learn Russian rather than English as their foreign language in school, so many adults don't speak English.

Try to get off the foreigners path and onto the locals path, as it were:  instead of a having lunch at a multinational fast food chain, or a restaurant with waiters who cater to tourists, go to a bakery for "Brötchen" (rolls), a butcher for "Aufschnitt" (cold cuts), and a market for "Obst" (fruit).  Do go sightseeing, but try to read the German signs and listen to the German audio tours.

The way to improve your German is to hear German and read German and speak German.

  6. Hamburg Germany is a must - I guess.

More theaters than in any city in Europe but London

The shopping Capital of Northern Europe

    Party capital of Europe

beautiful sights, nice museums, wonderful restaurants  ...a great place

  7. Well the main cities in Germany are

Berlin : Capital, lots of culture , nightlife and shopping. Lots of historic sights such as the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, the remains of the Berlin wall.

Hamburg: absolutely charming city, hang out at the beach, go shopping at the Europa Passage, and enjoy the nightlife at the biggest party scene in Europe the "Kietz" . If you want Amsterdam like parties and Paris like chic shopping you better go and visit Hamburg. Its amazing !

Munich : Its probably the stereotype german city, everything an american would ever want in Germany ;) beautiful. Have a beer in the Hofbräuhaus or at any local beergarden. if youre lucky you`ll see people wear lederhosen. Go to the P1 for highsociety and celebrity dancing. Or hang out at the "Pacha". Its great for shopping too. Once you are in Bavaria, you should absolutely make a day trip to the castle of Neuschwanstein. Its the most beautiful castle in the world (the Disney world castles were shaped like it ! )

Cologne: is know for its friendly and happy citizens, you HAVE to see the Cologne dome ! that is a stunning cathedral ! Go party at the "Tiefenrausch" ! The cologne people are open and like to party a lot !

Places that are not a "must-see" are Frankfurt and Düsseldorf but still really nice !

You should definitely make a round trip. If you want to stay inside Germany, get a railway ticket for the time you are traveling. The german railwaysystem is great, even though they are not always on time ;) www.db.de will get you there.

If you want to stay at a cheap place, you wont find any better accomodation for that price other than in a german youthhostel. They aren`t too fancy. But its clean and you get a good breakfast and its way cheap.

If you`d rather stay at a hotel, there is a special chain called the Hotel 25 hours. They are located in Frankfurt and Hamburg. They give you a 25% discount if you are under 25 years. Every room they have is decorated in a different style. Its not too expensive, and staying at the hotel is a cool experience !

  8. If you want to improve your German --- Hannover should be your choice. As to the Ministery of Foreign Aiffairs of the Italian Republic in Hannover the best German is spoken --- but sorry Hannover is the most borring city in Germany. If you want an open minded  international flair --- Hamburg is a must --- if you want charming german people - go to Cologne- but there you will learn everything but German. If you want the american stereotype of Germany visit Munich and don't forget to visit the Deutsche Museum it will save you some years of studiing physics.

    Greetings from Hamburg, Germany

    Heinz

  9. If you'd like to see the country, make a round-trip including Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Munich. Visiting just one city doesn't mean  you have seen Germany as a whole. (And whoever compares Düsseldorf to LA hasn't ever been to LA :-)

You can use the German Rail Pass, it's valid for a selectable number of days within four weeks. For more info see http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en...

For info about places to stay see the German Youth Hostel Association at http://www.jugendherberge.de/en/
