Heidelburg is my favorite.  I have been there 4 times and am planning another trip this summer.  It is a true europran town that has a lot of personality and plenty of things to do for all ages.  The summer is the best time to go.

If you go to germany, you should go to Munich (in the south), Berlin (in the east), Duesseldorf/ Cologne (in the west) or Hamburg (in the north). These are beautifull citys in germany.

Well Garmisch is very nice- it's a small little town in  south western Germany- but Dresden is my favorite. Most of the buildings were destroyed in World War II, but they were rebuilt and look very old! They also have a lot of trolleys, so be careful! And have fun! (Also- Munich is nice, too! And there's a little town near Dusseldorf called Kalkar, and it is very cute!)

I've been to hamburg and it's sensational!

But i love my City also, its about 3 hours north from Munich, not as big, it's called Coburg. It has a lot of history. There's the Veste, its a hudge Castle, built in the 18 hundrets (i think) and Adolf Hitler wrote his book in that castle named "mein Krieg" (my war)

So, maybe that's a city to drive to *smile*

Berlin it´s a city with a lot of things going on plus it´s still getting rebuilt´, it a very moden city, check it out.

Munich. Its clean, safe, has all the 'German' things you expect, shopping, great public transit, and even things for kids to do.  Don't stay near the train station and find restaurants outside of the pedestrian zone. Go north on subway lines U6 or U3 to Schwabing for window shopping, cafes, and dining.

Munich

Ooops, didn't notice so many were answering this, so I guess I have to throw my hometown in as well.

Nuremberg - Nürnberg.

It is a medium sized city, which I also moved to one of those in the US - I guess if you come from one of those its hard to change.

Nuremberg has a lot of history i fyou like that sort of thing. Good and bad. Progroms, great artists (Dürer among others), great inventors(first pocket watch and globe), place of first meeting of german emporers for hundreds of years, n**i rally ground, toy museum, Nazy rally ground holocaust museum. Germanic Museum, art museums, opera, theaters, GREAT modern movie theater downtown (with bars and restaurants and IMAX underground)

And thats just the cultural stuff. Lots of clubs, dance halls, bars, restaurants in the unique old city center all surrounded by the longest still existing (well, rebuild of course) city wall with almost countless turrets and towers and of course the main castle on top of the hill.

Great food both german and international (esp Turkish, Greek, Italian, Chinese) and more. And of course the whole xmas market, gingerbread, Nuernberger sausages...

I guess it is obvious that I love and miss my hometown besides its mixed history and my mixed heritage as a german Jew.
