A friend of mine, told me once that she was sorry my son was not a girl. I thought the comment strange, but knew there had to be more to it. She said that she adored my son & respected my parenting of him, but since she respected that my self worth was in head & heart & not my looks and belongings... a problem she & I feel that many woman have. She said that she wished a had a little girl to teach the right kind of values & self image that many girls struggle with & many never succeed.
Two years later I had that little girl & she is still young, but I do feel the pressure even now not to push "pink" & "princesses" and to not put value on those things that I think may hinder her as she grows up.
It was really the best compliment I have ever received & I hope I live up to her expectations, for my daughters sake.
