  1. HDMI is high definition mutimedia interface.  It can support up to 1080P resolutin, and 7.1 channels of audio I think(maybe 9.1).  The reciever has a HDMI input which means it will support HD audio. Most recievers also have the ability to run a HDMI DVD player through them to ur TV so you will have everything running through the reciever.  I think this is what you mean by a HDMI switcher.  If your looking to build a home theater, I recomend going with a Pioneer 7.1 reciever, JBL speakers, and a blueray disc player.  THis is for a costom home theater.  If you want to pay about $200 and not build one, I would go with a HTIB(home theater in box). These units usualy come with a reciever(500-1000 watts) a DVD player(some with HD capabiliy) and speakers.  Some good names in theses are panasonic, yamaha, and phillips.

    Good Luck!
