What is the best convertible carseat for a small car?

I posted this in the parenting section, but I am going to put it here too. Hopefully I can get more answers....

My 8 month old is about to outgrow her infant seatand I can't find a convertible seat that fits in my car. I have a Mercedes C-Class, which is about the size of a Jetta or Civic sedan. I have tried a few seats at the store, but no luck. Anyone out there have any recommendations? Anything to avoid? What do you use in your small car? I want to avoid having it push against the front seats, or stick through to the front. Thanks.
