  1. Depending on your age I would be careful about the use of credit cards.

American Express is my suggestion because on their traditional cards the balance is due by month end. This can help control over spending, and the paid in full month history looks good on your credit rating for the future.

  2. First I'll explain the best way to use credit cards and build your credit, then I can explain how to determine the best card for you.

The best way to use credit cards is this:

    1.  Find the rewards card that pays you great rewards for your normal expenses

    2.  Funnel most/all of your normal spending through the card(s) without max'ing them out (i.e. use your credit card just like you would use cash)

    3.  Always pay your monthly balance in full

    That way you'll:

    1.  Build your credit quickly (by using your card(s) and paying them off consistently every month across time)

    2.  Avoid interest and fees

    3.  Earn great rewards

Assuming you want to do that and pay your balance off every month (as opposed to carrying a balance and paying interest charges), then you can use this rewards calculator to find the credit card(s) that will pay you the most in rewards for your normal expenses:

A couple good ones include the American Express Blue Cash card and the Capital One Rewards cards.

  3. to build you credit

here are the top two credit cards

    Blue from American Express®

    and

    Citi® Platinum Select® MasterCard®

both are great for building credit

they also have no annual fee and low interest rates.

also the links i have provided explain the credit cards in full detail and allow you to apply for them safely on the American Express or Citi websites.

  4. If your main goal is to build up your credit, and if your credit isn't very good, you may end up having to apply for a secured card.  Its just a credit card that you have to put a deposit on.  There are also quite a few card issuers now that offer unsecured (no deposit, not prepaid, etc.), but you want to make sure to see if they have an annual fee.

I would recommend checking out a good credit card comparison website to see what kind of offers are out there for someone in your situation.
