  1. This is like asking "What is the best volume for my car radio"

    See the problem?

First: Use a laser pointer to see where the speakers are pointing. Make sure everything is symetrical.  (Speakers 'throw' sound like a D cell flashlight- intense directly in front, but a quick drop off to the sides.)

Second:Get a Radio Shack analog SPL meter. This can measure 'volume'. Set it for "C" rating and Avg.

Third: Get a copy of AVIA or Digital Video Essentials. They have test tones that move around to each speaker.  Fire up the Test Tones.

Fourth: Adjust your master volume so the left/right speakers produce 75 db at the primary listening position.

Use the setup menu to add/subtract volume from the center so it also produces 75 db. Repeat for the left and right rear speakers.

Sub: Adjust this to produce about 80-83 db (yes, higher than the other speakers)

IMPORTANT: turn down the master volume for normal TV/movie listening.  You just use 75 db to level things.

Now you have a 'calibrated' system.
