What is the best deal for buying sim cards in UK for use in New Zealand?

I understand that I can save money by buying a different sim card for my mobile phone before going to New Zealand. There are several offers on the net ( e.g. OneRoam, Go-Sim) but I wonder what experience other people may have had?

  1. Buy a vodafone sim card when you get here that is your cheapest way to do it but as the other persons says get it unlocked before coming or you can do it here for about $30-$40 to do and the sim cost $35 to buy and then just get top up for it

  2. Would you be only (mostly) using it to ring NZ numbers? If so then it is probably best to simply buy one in NZ and put it in your current phone.

But remember to get your phone unlocked first so it can take sim cards from a different network.

  3. There are a few companies offering 'travelSIMs' in the UK - the advantage is that whatever country you take them to in the world, your friends can call you on a UK mobile number and it connects to you without you being charged for receiving the call.

If you are mainly wanting the SIM card to make calls within NZ to other numbers in NZ, then you should get a local pay-as-you-go SIM card.  This should cost you no more than about £10.

You could get a Noodle account before you leave (free) and link this to your NZ SIM card.  This would again allow you to receive calls from the UK without having to pay extra to receive the call.

  4. I agree with Stacey.

Vodafone NZ is the only network in New Zealand with major coverage. If you only intend to use the SIM in New Zealand then just get a pay & go SIM when you arrive.
