I go away from home quite a bit and want to be able to send and receive emails. I am on a tight budget and I wonder is there a device I could carry round with me that is cheap enough to use but from which I could email? e.g a friend mentioned a blackberry? or perhaps a phone. Can anyone recommend a device they use for a similar purpose??

  1. I have a palm pilot. The new one. They have wi-fi so if you're in an area with internet it works great for checking email and stuff.

Problem arises when you have no wifi networks available.

I use a blackjack ii as my cell phone and I have three of my email addresses programmed in. I picked how often i want it to refresh the inbox (two of them are once a day, the other is instant) and I email all day long as I please. Battery life is great too and the phone is currently $80 after rebate in the stores. Also if you go to school or work for certain companies, at&t gives you discounts so be sure to check :)

personally I'd get a phone but that's a personal preference. If you really only need email, i'd look into other handheld devices.

  2. iPhone is excellent for emails but it can become expensive due to the monthly bills. You could also try iPod Touch which is only 299 and  there are no monthly bills. If you are in a wi-fi zone you can send and receive emails just like iPhone.

  3. theres quite a few options to explore. It also depends on how you're going to pay. A blackberry is a great way to stay in touch but you can only get one on contract and have the email/ internet as part as your tariff you're looking at about £40pm on an 18 month contract. Please note you can buy Blackberrys from a 2nd hand phone store but if you put in a PAYG simcard you won't be able to get email/internet. You could get a internet tablet by nokia for about £60 I bought one off ebay, you connect via either bluetooth phone or wifi but for bluetooth you need a data tariff or you could buy a pocket surfer which has an embedded simcard and buy a monthly subscription.

Another idea is get a data tariff where you get unlimited access or 1gb for example I'm on 3uk and my phone lets me view my emails, some can even push emails (deliver emails to your front screen of your mobile phone). The Nokia Internet tablets there are three models 1st 770, then the n800 and the new model the n810. The n810 will set you back about £285.
