for a first bike either one will be good enough. generally any j*p bike a ktm or tm are good bikes

there is no bad dirtbike just one you dont like. the kx and crf are great bikes but i personaly like the crf better.

Dirt Rider picked the CRF as the winner but by a very small margine. You really can't go wrong with either although the test did say that the Kawi was bad about jumping out of gear. That alone would be enough to steer me toward the Honda, but a smooth tranny is something that is a big deal to me. Also I think the CRF450 has gotten more acclaim than just about any bike I can remember.

My experience, which spans 20 years and just about all makes of dirt bikes, is that Honda tends to be the most reliable. Outside of reliabilty all makes perform very well.
