  1. When we go on cruises, for formal night, we dress the same as we would to go to church.

  2. Cruise wear has "downgraded" some over the years. It is not the cruise line so much as the ports. If in Mexico or the Caribbean, it is a lot more casual than Europe or Alaska. Basically, no shorts in the formal dining room. For men, most nights is slacks and a polo shirt, an a couple of nights with a suit or tux (picture nights). Take the opportunity to dress up and enjoy--- but please, don't worry about it. As in most places, some will dress better, some will dress worse... it is just what you feel good in. :)  Bon voyage!

  3. On NCL, there is no need to bring formal wear unless you want to.  NCL is usually business casual for dinner, but you can wear anything presentable (meaning no shoes and flip flops for dinner).  Every other meal is casual attire.  I love NCL because of their freestyle cruising.

  4. NCL  is very casual.  on formal night hawaian shirts are allowed ( it is formal wear for Hawaiaans)  .   jeans are allowed also.  (considered formal yes for Texans ).    started out only allowed for texas sailings but caught on expanded to the rest of the embarkation ports.     anyway NCL allows anything but shorts in the dining rooms after 5 pm.   jean capris are fine for women.   skirts are fine.   wear whatever you like.   dress up if you want to .  there are some that wear beaded gowns / elegant evening wear / tuxedos and look very nice.   enjoy the cruise and don't worry about your clothes

  5. Norwegian cruises are very informal as far as dress is concerned since they started the "freestyle" cruising.  So during the day shorts, swim wear, "T" shirts, tank tops and flip flop or sandals around the ship and the pool.  After 6:00PM sports/business casual meaning long pants, slacks, skirt and blouse for women is the norm, particularly for the main dining room and some specialty restaurants.

On Formal nights most people on NCL ships don't bother to dress up.  On our last cruise on NCL last year they called formal night "dress up if you want to" night and only about 20% of the people did.  So you can take a suit and be dressy on NCL and wear it if you want to, and if you don't you will not feel out of place.

  6. Norwegian is the first cruise to realize that their customers were on their vacations and allow them to dress the way they do everyday. You wear what you feel comfortable in. At any resturant on their ship I have seen people in suits or jeans. Whether you are wearing a suit or shorts you paid to be on that ship and have the right to sit down and eat. Been on Norwegian many times & wear jeans 365 days a year no matter what.
