  1. Let's break it down:

WATER = VERY GOOD.  It's probably the best thing on the planet for you because it re-hydrates you without a bunch of additives that affect your metabolism or make you heavier.

MILK = VERY GOOD.  Milk has protein and calcium, which are two of your biggest allies for being healthy and keeping the flab off.  Skim milk or 2% milk is better than whole.

TEA = VERY GOOD, BUT...Green tea and black pekoe tea, which are the most common, are high in antioxidants and have just enough caffeine to give your metabolism a boost without wreaking havoc with it.  The problem is the stuff made by Arizona, Lipton, Nestea, and Snapple is LOADED with high fructose corn syrup, which is the father of all dietary evil.  It's best to brew your own tea or find tea that is 100% tea with nothing added.  Trader Joe's sells several types of tea that are 100% brewed tea with nothing added.

COFFEE = OK, BUT...Coffee also has antioxidants (not as many as tea) and manageable amounts of caffeine, but once you start adding cream and sugar it becomes a flab-adder.

FRUIT/VEGETABLE JUICE = OK, BUT...You're really better off eating your fruits and veggies instead of drinking them.  The juicing process strips out a lot of the nutrients and concentrates the sugars.  If you drink fruit and/or veggie juice, make sure it's 100% juice.  A lot of "juices" are 25% juice or less, and the rest of it is water and high fructose corn syrup.

SPORTS DRINKS = BAD.  Doesn't matter who makes them -- Read the labels and you'll find that the two chief ingredients are water and high-fructose corn syrup.  Why is HFCS so bad?  Let's see...it causes weight gain, it lowers your "good" cholesterol while raising your "bad" cholesterol, it raises your triglycerides, and over time consuming too much of it can cause Type II adult-onset diabetes.  You're much better off re-hydrating yourself when working out or playing sports with plain old water.

SOFT DRINKS = VERY BAD.  Care to guess what the two main ingredients in Coke, Sprite, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper, or any other soft drink you care to name are?  Soft drinks are worse than sports drinks because they have more high-fructose corn syrup and they also have carbonated water, which is worse for your teeth than sugar or HFCS.  Combine carbonated water and HFCS and you can do serious damage to your teeth, not to mention slapping on an extra 15 pounds a year just by drinking one can of Coke per day...

ENERGY DRINKS = EXTREMELY BAD.  Energy drinks are simply soft drinks with additives like ginseng, guarana, taurine, etc.  So not only do you get the weight gain and teeth-eroding effects, you get a bunch of powerful stimulants that wreak havoc with your metabolism.  The problem is these stimulants can cause PERMANENT damage to your metabolism.  What kind of damage?  Your metabolism slows down when you stop drinking them.  As a result, you now have to eat less and exercise more just to maintain your weight (or you have to work a lot harder if you want to lose weight).  Avoid energy drinks like the plague.

  4. Most people are dehydrated, which means that salt has become too concentrated in their blood from losing too much water. So the healthiest beverage is usually plain water.
