  1. The Canon ZR500 is a miniDV based camcorder. It has USB and DV ports. USB is used only for transferring stills off the memory card. A Firewire cable connected to the DV port on the camcorder to a Firewire 400 port on your computer can import the video from the miniDV tape using MovieMaker (or something more sophisticated like Sony Vegas) for Windows or iMovie (or FinalCut) for Macintosh.

USB will not transfer video from the miniDV tape.

If your computer does not have a firewire400 port, they are cheap and easy to add if you have an available PCI slot (desktop) or PCMCIA slot (laptop). Macintosh computers have had firewire 400 ports for many years.

You will probably also need a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable. Firewire, IEEE1394 and i.Link are all the same thing.

Once the video is in the computer, you can edit and save the video.. and use WinDVD to make a menu and burn DVDs that can play in normal DVD players... In the Mac world, iDVD does that job.

  2. The samsung d963 camcorder is pretty easy to use.
