  1. There is not just one educational approach that works with every child.  Teachers work on different approaches to try to find one that best fits your child.  We work on communication, social skills and academics as we can.  Different students are at different levels and like any other student they need to feel they are doing a good job so reinforcers are very helpful.  Student interests can get students attention and expand their knowledge base.  Nothing works all the time with these wonderful kids so to a degree it's a trial and error to find what works best for them...NEVER GIVING UP ON THEM!  They are incredible people and deserve to be treated with kindness and respect.

  2. Each person with autism is different..some cases are more severe than others, you can 2 people with the exact same characteristics and they can act completely different from each other.  What may work with one individual may not work with another. Most children with Autsim should have either a IEP or IFSP (depends on age) or a 504 Plan in place..the choice between the IEP/IFSP and a 504 plan depends on the severity of the autism and the information on how to eduacte them should be included within those documents.

A 504 plan is a legal document falling under the provisions of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. It is designed to plan a program of instructional services to assist students with special needs who are in a regular education setting.

An IEP (dividualized educational plan)  is designed to meet the unique educational needs of one child. The IEP must be tailored to the individual student's needs as identified by the evaluation process and must help teachers and related service providers understand the student and how best to work with that student. In other words, the IEP should describe how the student learns, how the student best demonstrates that learning and how the school staff and student will work together to help the student learn better.

The IFSP (individual family service plan - ages 3-5) is set up to identify individualized supports and services that will enhance the child’s development. The IFSP can be used as an IEP for the child if certain terms are met.

  4. i dunno but i bet it sure aint a swift kick to the head

  5. There is a type of instruction that is used with individuals with autism called Applied Behavior Analyis (ABA) and is also known as Discrete Trial Instruction (DTI). Steps to learn something are broken down by its individual parts (like rather than learning all the colors, lets learn each individual color and then discriminate) and with correct responses and behavior a child is rewarded by something that they actually want (snacks, TV time, playing with a toy, a break). That is not to say that every response gets a reward, but a number of responses will. It is rigid, but it is effective to teach conversation, proper behavior, and academics.

  6. Use what their special interest is a motivation..art, science, etc. Also, a teacher that is flexible and does not YELL.  Also, lessen the amount of time spent on one subject. In other word frequent breaks. If handwriting is an issue. Have him.her do some sit up just before writing(it really helps). Rewards for small tasks ..for example..DO not say we have read this book. Let's read one  chapter now and another after supper. HOPE THIS HELPS. Get an IEP or 504 in place at school.

  7. This is an extremely loaded question. Many individuals are attached to specific educational approaches and believe that this is the only form of intervention for a child with autism.

I believe that to best serve a child with autism, you need to look at which symptoms of autism they have and what they NEED!!! The educational approach also needs to take into consideration what the parents want for their child.

Some popular and highly regarded educational approaches for children with autism are listed below...

-Discrete Trial (Based from research of ABA)

-Verbal Behavior (Based from research of ABA)

    - TEACCH

    - RDI

    - PECS

  8. I think it depends on the child.  Read some books on autism from the library and see what sounds like the best approach for your child.  Also, try to read about sensory integration disorder, since most children with autism can benefit from therapy for that.

  9. This will vary from child to child - the degree of difficulties and the very nature of the difficulties are individual. Some children thrive in a residential school. Others can cope in special units.

It's well worth researching and getting advice from National Autistic Society.(They have a website.)

  10. Art Therapy...children with autism have problems in social interaction n sense. through Art, they could convey their thoughts, some of them have high IQs but because of their speech disability they cant seem to express themselves...Art is the best therapy, from my opinion that is...
