My grandpa will be 99 soon. He's amazingly healthy and he can see well, but can no longer hear and can't keep up with the subtitles on the tv. He's the sweetest old man to me, but we have a hard time communicating. He speaks Chinese. I don't speak it well and aside from that fact he can't hear me when i try to speak with him, so we can never have conversations. I'd like to show him i care, with some act of affection. He's very bored, not being trusted to travel anywhere at his old age. If you can come up with any gift ideas to entertain him much thanks.

  1.     *  1. Pictures. Old or new photographs of family and friends are usually a hit, especially if they’re presented in a nice frame.

        * 2. Touches of home. Those receiving care in a nursing facility may appreciate warm touches such as a family heirloom.

        * 3. A special meal. Care recipients often fall into humdrum eating patterns. Treat them to an indulgent favorite meal.

        * 4. A child's touch. If you have children, consider asking them to do an art project, and have it framed nicely.

        * 5. Little fixes. Do something about a small daily annoyance, such as getting a plug-in room deodorizer for an unpleasant-smelling room.

        * 6. A subscription. Do a little homework and find a magazine or newsletter they might look forward to receiving each month.

        * 7. Library services. Your local library may mail books free to homebound people. Help set up and use this service.

        * 8. Electronic reminders. A medication reminder wristwatch can be especially helpful. Take the time to show them how to use it.

        * 9. Helping aides. From easy-grip utensils to sock pullers, there’s a product designed for just about every daily difficulty.

        * 10. Safety products. Devices that prevent slips and falls can provide peace of mind. Arrange for installation or do it yourself.

  2. is your grandpa chinese? you know, I am interested with chinese culture and her history. so I think your grandpa is the same like me and he should have deep memory about his old day in chinese. I strongly recommend you to give him a book posted with old chinese photos or stamps. so bring he to his happy young days.

or visit this site to buy other great gift:

  3. what about making him a slide show of everyone that loves him and you could maybe put in some captions so he can read. you can add tons of pictures and maybe a song(i know he cant hear very well but he might be able to hear his favorite songs). it will be a special gift that he can use over and over again or you can make several of the slideshows for him that would be great entertainment!!! good luck.

  4. Most elderly people really just want one thing... your time.  The best gift you can give him is spending time with him

So then the issue becomes what to do.  Since he has good eye site, maybe you could work on a puzzle together.  Or maybe there are some games he enjoys.... mahjong, dominoes, cards, etc.. that don't require too much talking but you could enjoy together.

You could also ask your parents for some ideas.  Since they actually know both of you they may be able to come up with some good ideas as well.

  5. I would recommend buying him a Digital Picture Frame.  What you do is upload a bunch of pictures from your computer to the Frame and he will have a gorgeous slideshow of all of his family, friends and favorite things.  Perhaps your parents have pictures, or can raid his pictures for you so you can load them up and put them on the frame.  Give him his originals back but he can hang this on a wall, or place it on a table and the pictures change on their own.  It's a great gift.  I got this for my husband's grandmother who is in a nursing home for stroke related Alzheimer's and she just loves it.

You can find these anywhere.  Target and WalMart carry them, too.

    Good luck!

  6. A scrapbook filled with photos and mementos would be nice and meaningful.
