Question:

What is the best entry-level Sport Motorcycle that doesn't make me look girly?

I know that cars have gender/class labels (girly cars, soccermom rides, etc). I'm pretty sure sport bikes (and other types in general) have similar labels, but I'm not familiar with them.

So any tips on a good entry-level sport bike, with low maintenance commitments (relative to other kinds in the sport category), yet doesn't make me look girly will be greatly appreciated.

It is sad that these vehicle labels continuously judge our lifestyle. It is even sadder that having said that, I myself still choose to follow these labels. :)

  1. Ive been riding 40 years,,too.....

& Ive ridden everything from 1100cc sports bikes to 100cc commuters...  (185cc Suzuki race replica would do 100 MPH)

& if you want to call me a girlie.... I will hit you with my handbag...

  2. Ninja 650R

  3. I know what you mean about girly bikes. The Katana would be a perfect example of a girly bike. When a guy rolls up on a Katana, it is automatically assumed he is a newbie and only has that bike to learn on. A girl however is more accepted on it as a permenant bike. Most females I see and ride with are on the same stuff us guys ride. R6, CBR1000, R!, and GSX/R1000

It sounds like you are looking to fit in with the sport bike lifestyle. keeping it all real, I haven't seen a 2008 Ninja 250R socially. Not at any events, rides, charities, or bike nights. Concord Mills bike night is one of the biggest events in NC (2500+ bikes)and I haven't seen one. The skinny tires, scooter exhaust, and overall mini look make it stand out. Ignore people saying nobody will notice it's a 250. Everybody will notice.

My advice would be for you to take an MSF course. If you are scared of a 600, get a used 250 if you can find one and just practice. Find an empty parking lot or deserted back road and just ride for hours on end. Once you build up your confidence go test ride a 600 somewhere. The 600 is the real starter sport bike. I as well as the majority started on a 600CC. It takes a mature mind, patience, and lots of practice.

I taught myself to ride on a 1997 ZX6, but I rode everyday for weeks. I'd get on after work and just ride for hours, practicing every type of road condition I couold think of. I never went to any bike night or joined any group rides. Just rode alone building up my skills. That's what you need to do.

It's my opinion that any true sport bike (excludes Ninja 250R)under 600CCs is ugly and or girly. Any used 600CC from the big 4 would be fine. I personally like bikes with a split seat. Those uni-seats look funny to me unless there's a girl on it.

I know I'll get a thumbs down here but he asked and I answered.

Whatever bike you choose man just wear your gear and don't be a show-off. take your time and practice.

  4. uh, I can't say as I know of a "girly bike" I know women who ride Full dressers and crotch rockets and everything in between. And you are right, it is sad that you haven't been involved in this sport of riding to know their is no such thing as a 'Girly Bike"

  5. The only girly bikes are the ones their owners spend more time and effort pimping out and primping themselves up like g*y pirates than riding.  Third world chicks who tote 3 kids every day on a moped in insane traffic have my respect as true badass bikers.  Girley is a matter of the rider not the bike.  And the first step is not to give a dam what other people think.

There are alot of good reasons to start with a Ninja 250.  Or if you want something that really handles I agree with the first guy.  Love my Suzuki DRZ400....but mine is offroad not motard.

  6. Depends on your build , because some bikes make you look out of place on it.

  7. Yep, the only solution is to get over the labels and worry about riding.  You'll get to where you want to be in time...everyone does.  If you don't get some skillz, you won't live long enough to get called girly.

Used 500cc bikes and  below are the best place to start on the street.  A MSF safety course will help you along significantly in your quest.  When you get the bike of your dreams someday, you'll understand perfectly what we are saying.

  8. Suzuki DR Models from 250 cc upwards to 650 cc.

These are dual sport so Icon Clothing & Protection

as seen on Internet sources give you a hint of how

    DR owners prick and primp.
